by LukeToday was our second day in Geneva. After having a delicious breakfast of toast, cereal, croissant and juice in the hotel, we went to a village called Meyrin to rent bicycles. We rode the bikes to CERN, where we toured several exhibits. First, we went to an exhibit called Microcosm and saw how a particle accelerator works. We learnt how it takes pictures of collisions. After visiting Microcosm, we went to the Globe of Science and Innovation. It was huge inside, and there was lots of information about our universe and how it was formed. I thought the most interesting part of the exhibit was the comfortable pod chairs that would feed you information when you sat in them. It was a really cool experience! Before leaving, we also saw a show about the Big Bang, the history of the universe and why the nations of Europe decided to found CERN.by AaronAs I woke up this morning, it was still dark outside. I checked my phone.. It was almost five o'clock. I forced myself to wake up so that I could pack my things for our trip to Geneva. But before going to Geneva, we went on a tour of the famous flower auction at Royal Flower Holland. As we walked into the building, I was shocked by the sight in front of me. It was gigantic! Many people were shuttling trolleys of flowers from here to there on the floor of the warehouse. The reason for all this activity is that the flowers that are sold need to get to their destination as soon as possible. As the guide showed us around, we learned about all the processes that are required to get flowers from the farmer's field to flower shops around the world. It is not as easy as you think. She also showed us the auction clock, which works the opposite way of a normal auction. The auctioneer starts with a high price and allows the price to drop. The buyer is the first person to stop the clock.by Mr. Andre One of the most entertaining activities we have done on the trip so far is to take part in a global treasure hunt called Geocaching. For those unfamiliar with the game, it is a past-time that uses GPS technology to allow players to locate hiding places or "caches". Before the trip, we had collected a few objects with tracking numbers (travel bugs) from caches in Taiwan. We plan to place these in caches in and around Delft, and to remove any travel bugs we find along the with the aim of putting them in caches we encounter.by TimToday, we got up early to make our breakfast and to prepare for the second-day of our engineering workshops. Our instructor, Jorn, told us that we would be designing and making a plane, not using paper, but a very lightweight wood called balsa. First, we made a simple model and tested it. It did not work out at all. After many failures, Jorn taught us about the forces that are important for flight: lift, gravity and friction. With this information, we tried again. We designed and built new models. After working for an hour, we finally finish our second plane. We tested our planes outside our classroom. Everyone had three attempts to see who could fly furthest. My plane flew the longest distance.by JosephThis morning, we went to the science center at TU Delft and did our first engineering and design workshop. Jorn, our teacher, first gave a presentation about industrial design, and then discussed the importance of function in design. Then, he asked us to design and make our own chair. After his presentation, we formed a team of students to compete against the counselors in a chair design competition.
